FAQs

How will I invite my guest?

We will support you identify and invite an appropriate guest, providing all of the relevant information. This could be the individual you may already know or perhaps someone else you’d like to get to know, perhaps someone different from yourself, or someone you think has a good story to tell.

When and where will the recording take place?

It’s up to you. The date, time and venue for your recorded conversation will be agreed between you (the host), your invited guest and the project facilitator (artist Andrew Wilson). This should be somewhere both the you and your invited guest feel safe and comfortable and (if possible) somewhere quiet.

What can I do to prepare?

You might like to have a discussion with your host beforehand, deciding what topics you’d both like to cover. You may also like to prepare a few questions to ask on the day.

What happens when I arrive?

You will be welcomed by Andrew Wilson who will introduce you to everyone, usually the person responsible for the recording and perhaps one other supporting the day. Andrew will explain what is going to happen and answer any questions or concerns.

How will the conversation begin?

We recommend that you start with something simple, perhaps a question that has an easy answer.

If you are uncertain or have any concerns, we can support you before the day. There will also be a resource created by the young people in Shieldfield which we can use to help prompt your conversation if necessary.

Can we talk about potentially difficult subjects?

What you talk about in the conversation is entirely up to you.

After the interview, you will receive a follow-up call to make sure you are ok. We also advise you to have a ‘buddy’ to check in with. We cannot however offer formal mental health support. If the conversation raises any difficult feelings for you that would benefit from professional support, we encourage you to seek help from your GP or call Samaritans on 116 123.

How long will the recording last?

Once we start the recording, it is expected to last between 30-60mins.

It is OK to stop the recording at any point if necessary.

Will I be rewarded for my time?

Yes. As a thank you for volunteering on this project, each participant will be offered a reward of £50. All payments will be made once the filming has ended (likely November 2022).  If your invited guest is under 16 years their reward will go towards a youth project of their choosing.

Is there any support available for people with additional needs?

Yes. We have funding and resources to support people with additional needs to participate in this project. This includes child care costs, payment for carers, translators, interpreters, venue environment and facilities etc. Please tell us if you have any additional needs and how we can support them.

What is a release form and why do I need to sign one?

A release form is essentially signed permission from the recorded individual(s) for the use of their image, audio, and dialogue. It is a legal validation that the adult(s) involved understand that they give consent for these recordings to be published in various ways associated with the project.

Release forms protect both the project creators and the people being recorded against any future complications regarding the use of the recorded content.

When is a release form signed?

A release form is signed before any recording, film or audio, begins (verbal consent is also OK). After the recording, participants will be given a copy of their recorded content and asked to sign a Copyright Clearance or Re-Use agreement giving permission for the recording to be part of the Dwellbeing Archive.

What about young people?

When recording people under the age of 16 the release form will be signed by a parent or legal guardian who gives permission for their involvement in the project.

What will happen with the recorded content?

The recorded content will form the basis of a 100 PEOPLE exhibition and feature film created by Andrew Wilson, and a Community Archive collectively owned by Dwellbeing Shieldfield.

Can people participate without being recorded (video or audio)?

Alternative ways to participate can be discussed with Andrew Wilson, for example: written text instead of a voice recording, or a photograph instead of a video recording.

Will everything be part of the film/exhibition?

No. It will not be possible to include all of the recorded conversations within the exhibition or the film. However, all of the recordings (with your permission) will be part of the Dwellbeing Archive.

If we consent to being recorded, will this become part of the archive?

It’s up to you. After the recorded session we will ask you again for permission to be part of the archive.

Can questions about the process be asked throughout the recording?

YES – this is a process of on-going consent
